Fury fall further out of playoff picture
Loss to North York could serve as final nail in coffin

OSHAWA -- The playoff hopes of the Durham Fury endured a massive hit on Tuesday night.

They entered the game only three points back of the North York Rangers, but were unable to cash in on a chance to close the gap, and instead it widened to five points after the Rangers posted a 5-3 victory at the Campus Ice Centre. With their season likely on the line, a lackluster third period cost the Fury as North York broke open a 3-3 game with a pair of goals, one by Anthony Bergin at the 7:17 mark, the other by Andrew Wright into an empty net with under a minute remaining.

The teams had been tied 2-2 after 20 minutes with both Fury goals courtesy the stick of Behn Robertson. However, former Fury Michael Markovic came back to haunt his old squad, scoring once and assisting on the other first period marker.

North York’s Chris Dixon and Durham’s Brett Eagleson traded goals less than two minutes apart in the second period.

After posting a 6-5 win over the Dixie Bee Hives on Saturday, momen tum was on the side of the Fury. However, the inconsistency that’s dogged them since day one this season, reared it’s ugly head again and will likely leave them on the outside looking in at the post season.

The Fury has four games and eight available points to make up the five point gap, however, the schedule does them no favours. They face the Toronto Junior Canadians twice, the St. Michael’s Buzzers’s once and the Ajax Attack once.

FURY FILES

Skylar Quinn and Trevor McKinney each scored twice, while singles were added by Derek Foote and Behn Robertson in Durham’s 6-5 overtime victory against Dixie on last Saturday... Brandon Foote stopped 42 shots in picking up the victory... A night earlier, McKinney also scored twice with single goals coming from Quinn, Steven Koufis and Kris Faric, but it wasn’t near enough as the Fury fell to Markham 8-5... German Tsatsura allowed six goals, while Foote was beaten once in relief and the final goal entered the empty net... Though it’s a case of too little, too late, Durham did manage to post a solid 5-3 mark in eight January games.
